It’s Not Yet Dark is a feature length documentary telling the story of Simon Fitzmaurice, a talented Irish Filmmaker who is living with Motor Neurone Disease. He was diagnosed at the age of 34, after his short film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. His wife was expecting their third child and they were left shocked and reeling. Simon refused to give up and started to work on the script for a feature film – My Name is Emily.
Now, five years later, the father of five children, he is completely physically incapacitated. Narrated by Colin Farrell, and using extracts from Simon’s best selling memoir, we follow Simon as he embarks on the direction of his first feature film through the use of the last physical attribute he has control over – his eyes.
‘It’s Not Yet Dark’ is the debut feature documentary by Frankie Fenton, An Táin Arts Centre’s Artist in Residence 2026. Frankie is an award-winning, IFTA-nominated documentary filmmaker and co-CEO of Kennedy Films. A graduate of Dublin City University (MA in Film) and Maynooth University (BA in Anthropology and Sociology), he is a Sundance alumnus and a participant of both IDFAcademy and the Eurodoc International Lab. He regularly contributes to international forums as a lecturer, panellist, and mentor, sharing his insights on documentary development, financing, and storytelling. His forthcoming feature documentary, How To Stop A War, continues his focus on urgent social and political themes, blending rigorous research with intimate human storytelling.
Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. We are planning a Culture Night to remember with something for everyone. Culture Night is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the Arts Office of Louth County Council.
