25k Loop Walk Drogheda Louth

The Boyne Valley Camino is a self-guided, 25km looped walk from Drogheda, which forms part of the Celtic Camino series.   It was created by the Boyne Valley Walking and Drogheda Walks teams.

The walk goes along the Boyne, through beautiful Townley Hall woods, via two OPW sites of Mellifont Abbey and Oldbridge House, through the village of Tullyallen, along the Boyne Canal, and returns to Drogheda along the stunning Boyneside Trail.

Official Camino Passports can be used to collect beautiful stamps created by local artists en route.  This 25km Boyne Valley Camino can be continued in Galicia by walking the old pilgrim route from A Coruña (the port of landing of pilgrims from Ireland through ages) to Santiago de Compostela (75km) to complete the 100km required to receive an official Compostela.

Please Note — Temporary Change of Route

The Obelisk Bridge will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian/cycle traffic from 21st August 2023 to facilitate extensive rehabilitation works.  Please note the following change of route for the period of works:

Instead of taking the route from St. Peter's Church in West Street to Oldbridge, hikers will make their way from the Church up through Mell and travel the blue route on the map all the way to the Townley Hall Car Park. On arrival they will enter Townley Hall grounds as per the map and they can choose to go on the pink route, up by King Williams Glen and all around Tullyallen as far as Mellifont where normally people take a break as this is the halfway point.

From there they will then follow the blue route bringing you on a gorgeous ramble up through the countryside with stunning views until you reach Townley Hall once again, and then trail out to the car park which actually faces the Obelisk and instead of crossing, due to the closure, hikers come back on the trail the way they came, back through Mell, passing St. Peter's Church and finishing at Clarkes Bar in Peter's Street.

Alternatively, people can take the blue route in Townley Hall after entering from the car park and work their way back on the pink route. Whatever their preference.

Walkers interested in taking the Greenway trail along the river to Oldbridge can still do this separately.  It is around a 10km walk from St Peter's Church in West Street and back, going via Dominics Park and out by the Boyne river straight to Oldbridge.
